Financial Secretary Spencer L. Allen, Ph.D.

Spencer has been a member of FUMC since 1997 and the Financial Secretary since 2014. He teaches courses on ancient Israel and early Christian history as a faculty member in the King Fahd Center for Middle East Studies in the Fulbright College at the University of Arkansas, and he offers several classes through the university's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). He is also the Theologian in Residence at First Presbyterian Church, Rogers, where he leads "Monday School" at 9am and occasionally preaches. Spencer holds a doctorate in Hebrew Bible and Assyriology from the University of Pennsylvania, a Masters of Theological Studies form Harvard Divinity School, and a B.A. in Psychology from Hendrix College, and he spent a year studying Semitic languages at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

His first book The Splintered Divine: A Study of Ishtar, Baal, and Yahweh Divine Names and Divine Multiplicity in the Ancient Near East was released by De Gruyter Press in 2015. He currently is wrapping up the manuscript for his second book, a collection of his sermons, "Give a Man a Fish and 12 Other Sermons Your Pastor Will Never Give". His other scholarly writings are available at academia.edu.

Spencer also sings in the Chancel Choir, leads the occasional FUMC seminar series Biblical Studies 101 (streamed here), and will guest teach your Sunday school or Disciple class if you give him at least two weeks' notice. His wife Laura works as a Marriage and Family Therapist at Maple Street Counseling in Rogers and Fayetteville.

A Church Alive, FUMC is a community of faith where every member is in ministry,
offering Christ, transforming lives and changing our world by the power of the Holy Spirit.
